FAG Wheel Bearing Improves Efficiency and Motorcycle's Life Cycle Cost

Due to the challenging road conditions and environment for motorcycles in South East Asia, Honda was looking for a wheel bearing with optimized characteristics. As a solution, Schaeffler recommended an FAG wheel bearing of Generation C. This bearing combines several important characteristics: lower friction, longer life and protection against the ingress of contaminants, while retaining as much grease as possible in the bearing. As a result, Honda was able to significantly reduce the maintenance requirements and fuel consumption of its motorcycles, while also achieving optimum energy efficiency.

RENOLIT Group, a leading manufacturer of plastic films, was facing repeated rolling bearing failures on various calenders at the location in Worms. This resulted in unplanned downtimes with corresponding production stoppages and costs.Schaeffler was given the task of developing a monitoring concept to improve the overall availability of the facilities.The challenges included the very slow roller speeds, high housing temperatures (up to 150 °C) and the difficulty of access to the measurement points during production.

Welded Tube of Canada is a privately owned leader in steel pipe and tube manufacturing. In its Concord plant, the company wanted to introduce predictive maintenance on the metal tube forming line. The aim was to increase gearbox availability and realize extended lead time for spare parts. Using the monitoring solution proposed by Schaeffler Welded Tube could save more than 100.000 Euro in a period of only six month.

Effective Lubrication Makes all the Difference

The availability of the wide belt sanding machine is crucial for the completion of the timber planks in a hardwood sawmill. Repeatedly, though, premature bearing failure occurred at the tension and contact rolls due to lubricant breakdown. An important factor here was the maintenance requirements of the belt sander. For safety reasons, the machine should be lubricated manually at standstill exclusively. Schaeffler recommended changing over from manual to automatic lubrication with FAG CONCEPT8 as well as switching the lubricant to Arcanol MULTITOP.

Automatic Lubrication of a Large-Size Fan

BMW Group relies on lubrication solutions of Schaeffler. A downtime of several hours for the drive-side bearings of a large fan was no longer acceptable for BMW. This was caused by overlubrication of the fan’s bearing positions, what subsequently resulted in failure of the bearings. Schaeffler and its sales partner Altmann recommended that the BMW Group use the FAG CONCEPT8. Since then all of the fan’s lubricating points are continuously and cleanly supplied with exactly the right quantity of lubricant using a single device.

Networked Maintenance at Schaeffler

Schaeffler internal maintenance departments rely on condition-oriented maintenance solutions developed in-house. To this end, the Herzogenaurach plant uses the FAG SmartCheck. Directly installed on pumps, motors, fans and gearboxes, this detects early vibrations that could indicate the beginning of a bearing damage. This information is correlated with further data and transferred in a visualized form to the control center. As a result, the maintenance employees based there have a consistent overview of all relevant production processes that concern production.

Customer-specific Induction Facility Gives Rapid and Reliable Heating of Workpieces

The customer is a leading energy company with numerous manufacturing locations and sales offices in Poland. The objective was to achieve more efficient replacement of bearings on the beater mills. Due to the conditions present, it was not possible to use a conventional heating device for heating the bearings. The customer was using a gas burner for this purpose. For the specific case of this application, Schaeffler developed a medium frequency induction device that is also suitable for mobile use.

FAG CONCEPT8 provides Constant Lubrication

At the Visonta open pit mine, coal is transported to the power plant via kilometer-long belt conveyors. Smoothly operating belt conveyors are thereby decisive in ensuring a trouble-free process. In order to ensure this process,
optimum lubrication – despite contamination and severe vibrations – is necessary. Furthermore, the lubrication points are often difficult to access or are very isolated. The FAG CONCEPT8 lubrication system filled with high quality Schaeffler lubricants from the Arcanol range was chosen for this application.
