Calender thermo rolls smooth the surface of the paper, thus improving its printability. Calender rolls can be heated or cooled. The thermo rolls of so-called soft calenders can be arranged either above or below a counter roll. Depending on their position, the bearings are subjected to either very high or low loads. The bearing arrangement must be designed for both of these conditions.
